SAN DIEGO (Ticker) - Brandon Webb triumphed in the duel between
Cy Young Award winners.

Webb won his sixth straight and Chris Snyder homered to lead the
Arizona Diamondbacks to a 2-1 win and series victory over the
San Diego Padres on Sunday.

The National League Cy Young award winner in 2006, Webb (6-0)
outmatched last year's recipient, San Diego starter Jake Peavy,
by tossing six innings and allowing just one run in a game that
tied the record for the hottest temperature (91 degrees) for an
April game at Petco Park.

The 28-year-old Webb gave up five hits while striking out five
batters and walking four.

"I used (my changeup) for a couple of big strikeouts today,"
Webb said. "I sat in the dugout before I went out and knew it
was going to be a hot one. You just stay cool, go down in the
tunnel to get some 'AC' before you go back out, but it was hot."

Juan Cruz and Tony Pena each contributed a scoreless inning
before Brandon Lyon retired the side in order in the ninth to
convert his seventh save in nine chances.

"It was about what we expected," Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin
said. "Both of (the starters) were outstanding. It was just
one blow off of Peavy."

Snyder, battling flu-like symptoms that forced him out of
Saturday's lineup, accounted for the only hit against Peavy
before the sixth inning. But the two-run blast gave Arizona a
2-0 advantage and was all the run support Webb would need.

"It was one of those things where you've just got to suck it up
and play," Snyder said. "It was a good day, no matter how I
feel right now. You look at the result of the game, and it came
out as advertised."

San Diego halved the deficit on a sacrifice fly by Jim Edmonds
that plated Adrian Gonzalez.

The Padres had a promising scoring chance in the sixth, when
they loaded the bases with one out. But Webb fanned Peavy and
got Brian Giles on a groundout to escape the jam.

"That's been sort of the story for the last 10 days or so, with
runners in scoring position just not getting that key hit,"
Padres manager Bud Black said. "It's just a situation where
we've got some guys who are not swinging the bats like they're
capable."

Peavy (3-1) allowed little aside from the home run, giving up
four hits over seven innings. The 26-year-old righthander
struck out nine and walked three.

"I just didn't do what I needed to do for us to beat a great
pitcher on the other side today," Peavy said. "That one (home
run) pitch cost us the ballgame. I gave up two runs, and it's
going to be hard to score three against Webb."

Khalil Greene had two hits for the Padres, who have lost 10 of
12.
