Padres find some offense in win over Phillies
SAN DIEGO 4, PHILADELPHIA 2

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- The Philadelphia Phillies may have given
away Jamie Moyer bobblehead dolls to their fans, but the San
Diego Padres did not make it a night to celebrate for the oldest
player in the majors.

Adrian Gonzalez slugged a two-run homer in the first inning off
the 45-year old lefty and the Padres' punchless offense, which
entered Wednesday last in the National League in runs and
batting average, produced 12 hits to snap a two-game losing
streak with a 4-2 win.

Chris Young turned in his second consecutive strong outing with
a two-run first inning home run to Chase Utley accounting for
the Phils' offense. The righthander allowed five hits over six
innings of work while striking out six to even his record at
2-2.

"I was just trying to locate my fastball and mix in some off
speed stuff," said Young, who notched his first win since April
1. "I got myself in some jams a couple of times, fortunately was
able to get some doubleplay balls and get out of it."

Gonzalez opened the scoring with his one-out homer to right
field. Kouzmanoff and Khalil Greene then reached base on
consecutive Phillie errors before Moyer (1-2) settled down to
retire the final two batters of the inning.

"It was a good start, put us on the board early and gave CY a
little chance to relax. He gave up the two-run shot but was
able to relax after that," said Gonzalez.

The Phillies tied the game in the bottom of the first in
identical fashion as Utley crushed his league-leading 11th homer
to right, scoring Eric Bruntlett.

Kouzmanoff opened the third inning with a homer to left field,
to give San Diego a 3-2 lead.

The Padres added an insurance run in the sixth. Josh Bard led
off with a double to left. Young then sacrificed him to third
and Brian Giles drew a walk. Former Phillie Tadahito Iguchi
greeted reliever Chad Durbin with his third of four hits in the
game, a RBI bloop single to make it 4-2.

Durbin then retired Gonzalez and Kouzmanoff to end the threat.

Young settled down after Utley's blast, allowing just three hits
after the first inning, and only two runners reached second
base. He was aided by a solid defensive effort that turned
three double plays.

"That is what we have seen the last couple of outing from C.Y.,"
Padres manager Bud Black said. "His velocity seems to be
coming back. He is getting some balls by people. He is around
the strike zone, in and out, up and down. Today when he needed
to make a pitch he made it at crucial times."

Joe Thatcher and Heath Bell each pitched a scoreless inning of
relief with the all-time saves leader Trevor Hoffman closing the
door in the ninth for his fifth save of the season.

"That is what we expect out of this group," said Black on the
offense. "We have some guys that we think are going to be
productive and tonight is what we expect and the guys think that
also."

The win was just the third for San Diego over its last 14 games.

"Hopefully this is the start of something good to happen on the
road trip," Gonzalez said. "We have have confidence in
ourselves and we know we are a better team that we have shown in
the first month here and hopefully this game can catapult us
into something better next week or so."

On his night, Moyer struggled allowing nine hits and four earned
runs over 5 1/3 innings of work.

"I wasn't sharp. I got what I deserved," said Moyer.
