DETROIT (Ticker) - Gary Sheffield drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Detroit Tigers to an 8-7 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night. Sheffield was activated off of the disabled list on Tuesday and hit a home run. On Wednesday, the slugger, who missed four weeks with an oblique strain, went 4-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI single to right center field to score Clete Thomas with the winning run. Carlos Guillen also had four hits for Detroit, including a three-run homer in the fourth that gave Detroit a 5-4 lead. Rick Ankiel hit two homers for St. Louis, which tied the game with a run in the fifth and scored a run in the seventh and eighth innings to take the lead each time, only to see Detroit tie the game in the bottom of the frame both times. Todd Jones (3-0) worked a perfect ninth to pick up the victory. Thomas started off the winning rally by leading off the ninth with a double off the wall in left. Sheffield followed and ripped a 3-2 pitch from Kyle McClellan's 3-2 to plate Thomas. McClellan (0-3) allowed a run and three hits in one inning and took the loss. The game was delayed by rain for 2 hours and 25 minutes in the top of the fifth inning Neither starter was particularly effective on Wednesday as Armando Galarraga allowed five runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings for Detroit and Kyle Lohse yielded five runs and 11 hits in four innings for St. Louis. |
