Mets vs. Yankees Series Betting Preview
The Subway Series returns as the New York Mets host the New York Yankees in a three-game set, with the Mets vs. Yankees odds showing the Yankees as favorites.
The Mets have had an up-and-down season so far and they enter this series coming off three games against the Miami Marlins from which the Mets won all three. The Mets and Marlins were supposed to play a fourth game, but it was postponed due to a couple of positive COVID-19 tests showing up for the Mets. In fact, the first game of the Mets vs. Yankees series is also postponed. The situation will be one to monitor.
On the other side, the Yankees enter this series coming off a hard-fought three-game set against the Tampa Bay Rays from which the Yankees lost all three games. Before that, the Yankees swept the Boston Red Sox across four games.
Looking at the World Series betting odds, the Yankees are still co-favorites alongside the Los Angeles Dodgers, whereas the Mets are at the top of the bottom half of the league.
Taking a look at the Mets vs. Yankees odds entering the series, the Yankees likely will be favored throughout.

Injuries On Both Sides
The Mets rotation is in flux, as starting pitcher David Peterson is on the IL with shoulder inflammation and is not expected to be available. Peterson had been off to an excellent start four appearances into his career. Michael Wacha has a chance to return from the IL this series, but the Mets are still hurting for starting pitching.
Once again, the Yankees have been hit hard by injuries. Aaron Judge (calf) is expected to make his return from the IL on Saturday or Sunday. Giancarlo Stanton (hamstring) and LeMahieu (thumb) are currently on the IL and will miss the series.
Mets at a Pitching Disadvantage
The Mets rotation is anchored by Jacob deGrom, but unless manager Luis Rojas throws him on short rest, he will miss the series. With Peterson already on the IL, the Mets will be at a heavy disadvantage.
In the bullpen, right-hander Seth Lugo took over the closer’s job from Edwin Diaz. Diaz has turned into a productive member of the bullpen farther away from the ninth inning. Mets relievers are top 10 in WHIP and xFIP among all bullpens in MLB.
The Mets offense is expected to miss Yankees ace Gerritt Cole, who’s normal turn to pitch is after the weekend. The Yankees have been one of the top 10 rotations in baseball, according to their SIERA. Cole is the anchor, Masihiro Tanaka has had mixed results since returning from IL on August 1. Left-handers Jordan Montgomery, J.A.Happ, and James Paxton round out the rotation.
The Yankees bullpen is bolstered by the return of closer Aroldis Chapman earlier in the week, and Zach Britton will ease back into the eighth-inning role after saving eight games in Chapman’s absence.
Both Offenses Can Hit
Both offenses have been ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in on-base percentage in recent weeks. The Yankees have been top three in runs per game for most of the season, while the Mets have hovered at the back end of the top 10 in the category. Mets outfielder Dominic Smith and second basemen Robinson Cano have gotten off to better than expected starts. 2019 NL Rookie of the Year Pete Alonso started slow but has started to show signs of life over the past week.
Offensively, the Yankees offense is top three in runs per game and could be number one depending on the night despite missing Stanton, LeMahieu, and possibly Judge. Luke Voit, Clint Frazier, and Gary Sanchez have helped the Yankees offense continue to put up big numbers.
Both teams can produce plenty of offense. Game totals and individual bats will be popular choices for Mets vs. Yankees props.
