Welcome back to the weekly golf betting roundup article!
We have a big major on tap next week with The Open Championship, so the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour are collaborating this week with a “co-sponsored” event between the two Tours with the Genesis Scottish Open.
As for the course, Renaissance Club will play host to the tournament. In the three years, where the European Tour held the event here, the winning scores were -22, -11, and -18, though it played as a par 71 in those events.
Wind is the main defense that the course has (as is the case with many courses in Scotland), and it is not expected to be very breezy this week.
I would expect plenty of scoring opportunities to be available. The course will play as a par 70 with five par threes and three par fives. As usual, ball striking and tee to green play will be the primary metrics that I will be looking at.
Let’s try to find some winning bets!
2022 Scottish Open Betting Picks
Outright Picks
- Jon Rahm to win (+1200 on DraftKings) – Although he spends most of his time playing on the PGA Tour these days, Rahm is no stranger to Scotland and links golf. In fact, this course should suit his game perfectly. We all know that the statistical metrics are rock solid, and it is no surprise that he leads this field in ball striking over the last 36 measured rounds. He also played in this event last year, shooting two under par or better in every round and finishing in solo 7th place. If you prioritize betting any one golfer at the top this week, Rahm is my pick.
- Sam Burns to win (+2800 on PointsBet) – Burns is always an elite win bet option given his high ceiling when he brings his “A” game. His inconsistency is what keeps him from being priced with the other stars in the +1000 ranges. However, he has three wins this season and finished 18th in this event last year. That experience certainly helps. He also grades out very well statistically, ranking 4th in this field in total strokes gained, 11th in approach play, and near the top in short game metrics over the past 36 rounds. The stock is still rising.
Top 10 Finish Picks
- Ryan Fox Top 10 Finish (+500 on FanDuel) – Fox has quietly been having a strong season on the European Tour. He has top-three finishes in each of his last three DP World Tour starts. That includes a runner-up finish at last week’s Irish Open. Fox is plenty long off the tee, and he made the cut at this event a year ago. His game remains underrated, and while we are no longer getting him at huge odds for a top ten, I’ll keep riding the wave.
- Rickie Fowler Top 10 Finish (+1100 on Bet365) – This feels like a gross bet, but Fowler did show some signs of life in an exhibition event in Ireland earlier this week. He should also be motivated, as he needs a top three finish to qualify for The Open Championship. Expect him to play aggressive golf, and I like that with the potentially scorable course conditions. He has a decent history on these types of layouts, and I’ll take a shot at +1100 odds.
Long Shots and Other Bets
- Long Shots – This is an interesting event to try to find some long shot bets. The European golfers that have experience on these types of courses are the best options for this. Jordan L. Smith, Victor Perez, and Johannes Veerman are three 100-to-1+ odds golfers that you could maybe take a peek at.
- Tommy Fleetwood over Justin Thomas H2H (+120 on BetRivers) – Thomas is obviously the more consistent of these two golfers, but I like getting Fleetwood at solid plus money here. Fleetwood has always had a tendency to play better on European soil, so I am more than happy to target him as a bet in Scotland. His short game has remained solid even as his play in his PGA Tour starts has been hit or miss. He has strong course history at the Renaissance Club with finishes of 25th and 2nd in this event over the last two years. I consider this close to a 50/50 bet, so give me the underdog.
Good luck this week everyone! Let’s win some money!
