Welcome back to the weekly golf betting roundup article! We have another PGA Tour stop in Texas this week, and this tournament will be held at Colonial Country Club. Sponsorship has changed over the years for this event, but the one constant has been the course. Colonial has been the host site for this event since 1946.
The course has withstood the test of time, even as technology has helped players get much better on the golf course. It’s a traditional par 70 layout that doesn’t offer much in the way of length, but the course can be very challenging, especially when the Texas winds pick up. The short par five first hole is the only real pushover on the course, and golfers are well advised to try and make birdie or eagle on that hole before the rest of the course greets them. The traditional late spring winds in Texas often pick up during this event, which serves to make Colonial even more of a challenging test.
Let’s try to find some winning betting picks!
Top Outright Bets –– Charles Schwab Challenge
Collin Morikawa To Win (+1800 on BetMGM and FanDuel) – We have a surprisingly strong top end of the field here for the week after a major. I’ll side with Morikawa as my preferred bet of the golfers that are sitting at +2000 or better. His strong iron play makes his game a fantastic fit for Colonial, and he has taken a liking to it. In his first two professional trips here, he has finished 2nd and 14th. With that valuable course history in his pocket and strong statistical metrics across the board (of course, with the exception of the putter at times), this could be a spot for him to pick up a win and put a relatively pedestrian PGA Championship in the rear view mirror.
Webb Simpson To Win (+4000 on DraftKings) – This bet isn’t necessarily about the stats. If you look at data-driven numbers for the 2021-2022 season, Webb Simpson isn’t going to stand out as anything resembling a strong bet. However, he simply hasn’t been healthy for much of the year. We haven’t seen him play in nearly as many tournaments as usual. The good news is that his health appears to be turning around. He is coming off an impressive T20 finish at the PGA Championship on a course that didn’t necessarily suit his game, and now he heads to a shorter track that will prioritize approach and short game play.
Top-10 Picks And Predictions
Sam Burns Top-10 Finish (+320 on Bet365) – It has been a relatively volatile season for Burns, but he still reminds us of his upside quite often. He finished 9th at the Arnold Palmer in March, won the Valspar Championship later that month, finished 2nd in the team event in New Orleans in April, and then popped for a T20 last week at the PGA Championship. His overall statistical numbers are still very strong, as he ranks inside the top 18 of this field in total strokes gained, tee to green, ball striking, and short game over the last 50 measured rounds. He could very easily contend for a win here, and he’s been kind to me in these SAO articles in the past. Let’s grab another W!
Tony Finau Top-10 Finish (+410 on FanDuel) – The numbers are slowly starting to come around for Tony Finau. If we just look at the 2022 season, Finau ranks 12th in this field in tee to green play, 11th in ball striking, 10th in strokes gained off the tee, and 19th in approach. The only concern has been with the flat stick. He had an up and down week at the PGA Championship, but I was very encouraged by his solid round of 68 on Sunday in tough scoring conditions. Finau has made the cut in four straight trips to Colonial, finishing inside the top 30 each time. Maybe — just maybe — this offers a chance for him to contend again, and these odds are very favorable on FD.
Long Shots and Other Bets
Long Shots – This isn’t the best event to try to peg long shot winners. No first time participant has won at Colonial in 21 years, so that’s quite the streak. Experience plays here. If you’re looking to take a dart throw on a long shot, Maverick McNealy or Tom Hoge (both 7o-to-1 on DK) are my favorites.
Will Zalatoris To Miss The Cut (+320 on FanDuel) – Well, I had Zalatoris as a win bet in this article last week. We came so close. He lost in a playoff to Justin Thomas, and hopefully some of you with Zalatoris tickets hedged that a little bit once the playoff came around. In any case, you know it has to weigh on his mind that he’s coming so close, yet can’t seem to find the winner’s circle. He’s a great golfer, but I question the mental readiness to roll this week. He could very easily put this all behind him quickly, but I think he has at least a 25% chance of missing the cut. That means we’re getting good odds at +320 for a miss.
Good luck this week everyone! Let’s win some money!
