Sports betting analyst Nick Galaida gives his best NBA pick for today’s Grizzlies vs. Timberwolves game — Friday, Jan. 27, 2023.

Grizzlies vs. Timberwolves Odds

On Friday, the Memphis Grizzlies will play the last leg of their five-game road trip against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Entering play, Memphis (31-17) owns the second-best record in the Western Conference, with Minnesota (25-25) sitting in a play-in position further down the standings. Nevertheless, oddsmakers are expecting a competitive game between these two teams to begin the weekend, pricing the Grizzlies as 3-point road favorites on the spread.

Memphis Grizzlies Betting Preview

Memphis began their five-game road trip with a one-point defeat against the Los Angeles Lakers, which seemed to be a minor bump in the road after winning each of their previous 11 contests. However, three more losses against the Phoenix Suns, Sacramento Kings, and Golden State Warriors have caused further alarm – calling into question this group’s ability to beat good teams on the road.

The Grizzlies are an NBA-best 20-3 in their home gym this season, but they are only 11-14 away from home. In those 25 games, they have been outscored by 1.6 points per 100 possessions – in large part due to the fact that they are allowing an additional 6.4 points per 100 possessions on the road compared to at home.

Tonight, Desmond Bane is questionable to take the floor due to a right knee injury, and Steven Adams will miss his third consecutive contest with a PCL sprain. Bane is second on the team in scoring this season, averaging 21.6 points per game.

He also leads the Grizzlies in three-point attempts and three-point percentage. Adams is the only member of the Memphis roster averaging more than 6.6 rebounds per game this season, leaving the frontcourt extremely thin ahead of tip-off. In two games this week with Adams on the sidelines, the Grizzlies have been outrebounded 97-67.

Minnesota Timberwolves Betting Preview

In 29 games since Karl-Anthony Towns last played on November 28, the Timberwolves are 15-14 overall, ranking 12th out of 30 teams in Net Rating. In that span, much of their success has come on their home floor, where they are 11-4, outscoring their opponents by 5.0 points per 100 possessions.

Following a brief period of inefficiency in which Anthony Edwards had three consecutive games shooting 41.2% or worse from the field, he has now scored 31 points or more in each of his last three trips to the hardwood. In those three games, he is 18 for 36 (50.0%) from beyond the arc. Playing at home this season, Edwards is averaging 24.9 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game.

Grizzlies vs. Timberwolves – Picks & Prediction

Per Cleaning the Glass, when Steven Adams is on the floor for the Memphis Grizzlies this season, the team ranks in the 92nd percentile in offensive efficiency and the 90th percentile in defensive efficiency. When he is on the sidelines, they go from one of the league’s best-rebounding teams to far worse than league average, and their offensive efficiency plummets to the 31st percentile.

In 15 home games with Karl-Anthony Towns out of the lineup, the Minnesota Timberwolves are 11-4. Assuming Rudy Gobert is healthy enough to suit up this evening, there will be a tremendous mismatch in the frontcourt for the third consecutive game for Memphis – a mismatch for which they have not yet provided an answer. There is value on the home underdogs in this spot.
